Playing Chess - My Journey

In the beginning, almost two decades ago, I was an amateur player. I didn't even know what chess notation was and how to record the moves. I would lose many games while I played with my dad or my brother but all along I knew there must be something more that I need to know on top of the basic moves.

Then something happened when I was in the 10th grade that totally took my game to a different level, One of  my friends introduced me to chess books he was so passionate about the game that it kindled my quest for learning chess even more.

Everyday, we would play and analyse games. At that time he had a private coach who left his regular job to pursue teaching chess full time.

My friend would often return from these classes and tell me all about the great chess players of the
past and we discussed a lot about different openings, traps and strategies.

We both were like mad scientists exploring the game. We did not have a chess club in our locality so we had to travel about 4 miles and guess what we were talking about during our travels. Yes! chess, chess nothing but chess.

I cherish those days with my friend even today as I'm writing this. Anyway, I have come a long way and I have made my fair share of mistakes. I have learned so much all these years so  I would like to share some of the tips here for you.

Give importance to mobility of pieces and development in the opening

Seldom move a piece twice in the opening

Have a plan of action and be flexible to change it if position demands it

When playing human opponents watch your body language don't give out obvious signals to your opponent.

Know your opponent's plan and check twice to ensure.

Castle early - put the king in safety and go for attack.

Look for tactical devices like Pins, Forks and skewers to gain advantage.

Use a good mix of tactics and strategy to win the game.

That's all for now.
